The Ozark Premier Plum (Prunus salicina 'Ozark Premier') This offspring of Burbank and Methley is an upright small, but vigorous growing deciduous plum tree. Attractive fragrant white flowers cover the branches in March, giving way to dark green foliage, on strong wood. Ozark plums have dark glossy red to purple skin with a pale yellow flesh that is sweet, tangy and juicy. A mid-season variety that ripens in the first weeks of July. Ozark is a heavy crop producer of very large plums. Expect crops to begin in just a few years with this fast-growing variety. Ozark is a perfect choice for warm planting zones. Stores well in the fridge for 6 to 10 weeks
Ozark is self-fertile so a second tree is not required, making it ideal for smaller gardens. However, planting more than one plum will increase fruit production.
Uses: Uses: Fresh eating, table, tarts, jams, jellies, wines and canning. Plant it on a lawn as a small shade tree.
Plant in full sun for the maximum growth and the heaviest crop. Plant it in any well-drained soil, adapts to alkaline and sandy soils. Resistant to most serious diseases of plum trees, pests are rarely a problem and this vigorous tree needs just a little trimming in late winter. Prune only to remove deadwood, crossing branches, or fast growing shoot that appear along the trunk or branches. Over-pruning can stunt fruit production.
The later plum trees bloom, the more tolerant they are to late frosts. Smaller trees can be covered to prevent damage. Not recommended for container growing. Maintain pH level of 6.0-7.0
Fruit production begins in 3-4 years, considered a medium growing, gaining up to 13-24" per year in height.
