The Pecan Tree (Carya Illinoinensis) is largest of the hickory species. They feature massive trunks and oval or rounded wide spreading crowns of branches that extend far down the trunk. They begin to bear nuts in 6–10 years, producing an average of 70–150 pounds of nuts per year, and the crops of sweet nuts will continue abundantly regardless of age. They will grow at a medium rate, with height increases of 13–24" per year before reaching a height of 70–100' with a 40–75' spread at maturity. These trees can for in upwards of 300 or more years and are prized in the woodworking world for its handsome grain. The nuts are favored by squirrels, deer, raccoons, foxes, wild turkeys, wood ducks, crows, blue jays and several other bird species.
